Blackheath Rhododendron Film Festival 2020
6–8 November, Blackheath Community Hall

RHODOWOOD! – the Blackheath Rhododendron Film Festival – features a broad selection of films and includes full-length features, short films and locally-made featurettes.


Current COVID-19 guidelines limit ticket numbers to 90 per session.

​Friday, 6 November

6.30pm – The Great Gatsby (2013, M)
Midwest native Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) arrives in 1922 New York in search of the American dream. Nick, a would-be writer, moves in next-door to millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and across the bay from his cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her philandering husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton). Thus, Nick becomes drawn into the captivating world of the wealthy and – as he bears witness to their illusions and deceits – pens a tale of impossible love, dreams, and tragedy.

Saturday, 7 November

10am – Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971, G)
A sweet boy from a poor family dreams of finding one of five golden tickets hidden inside chocolate bar wrappers which will admit him to the eccentric and reclusive Willy Wonka's magical factory. One after another, tickets are discovered by ghastly children – but will the lad find the last remaining one and have all his dreams come true?

1.15pm – Young Einstein (1988, PG)
Growing up on an apple farm in Tasmania, youthful Albert Einstein (Yahoo Serious) makes various scientific discoveries and winds up in plenty of unusual circumstances, even rescuing kittens from being cooked in a pie. The goofy, shock-haired Albert also develops the theory of relativity and subsequently promotes his revelation in Sydney, where he falls for the lovely Marie Curie (Odile Le Clezio) and somehow manages to invent rock 'n' roll along the way.

4pm – Free Solo (2018, M)
Professional rock climber Alex Honnold attempts to conquer the first free solo climb of famed El Capitan's 900-metre vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park. Daring, dangerous and dizzying stuff, the story of a one man simultaneously in competition and cooperation with nature.

6.45pm – The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975, M)
In this cult classic, sweethearts Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), stuck with a flat tire during a storm, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker (Meat Loaf) and a creepy butler (Richard O'Brien). Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named 'Rocky'.

Sunday, 8 November

1pm – The Magic Pudding (2000, G)
Bunyip Bluegum is a koala bear who has lost his parents and can't find them. While many of his friends and relatives fear that Bunyip's folks are dead, Bunyip is certain they're still alive, and sets out on the road to find them.

3.30pm – Bush Christmas (1983, G)
In the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, the Thompson family boast of their mare, Lucy, to strangers led by Long Bill (Chips Rafferty), not realising that the men are thieves. When Lucy and her foal are stolen, the children, sworn to silence by a bribe from Long Bill, set off in pursuit with Neza, a skillful young Aborigine, and visiting British friend Michael. They tell their perplexed parents that they are off for a Christmas camping trip in the wilds of the bush.

5.30pm – Strictly Ballroom (1992, PG)
A top ballroom dancer pairs with a plain, left-footed local girl when his maverick style earns him the disdain of his more conventionally-minded colleagues. Together, the team gives it their all and makes dreams of the National Championship title come true.

Complementary evening session glass of bubbles!
A limited number of 'Rhodo Class' comfy lounge chairs will be available for evening sessions. General seating is available for daytime sessions but feel free to bring something to sit on – a bean bag, cushion, picnic blanket, etc.

ROLLING OUT THE RED CARPET

We encourage everyone to dress up for the screenings! We'll have a photographer and photos will be available to download from the Rhodo website after the festival concludes.

COVID-19
Patrons must enter through Blackheath Community Hall's main entrance (via the Gardens). You'll be ushered to your table.  At the conclusion of the screening, please exit via the door to Gardiner Crescent.

It is a NSW Health requirement that patrons 
maintain social distancing and do not mingle. While not compulsory, we encourage you to wear a mask. 

Need the loo? Please use the accessible bathroom between Bates and Phillips Halls.

Tickets are non-refundable and no rain checks!
